Last year my word was Grow and it kept coming up over and over again in every area of my life. From trees to flourish, I couldn't stay away from grow. And I loved it. I felt like I grew so much in areas from public speaking to life coaching to criticism to friendships. But even in the midst of that growth there was fear. I feel like fear has haunted me my whole life. I learned in counseling that those who suffer with controlling tendencies (hello!) are actually driven by fear. Control = fear. Think about it. Usually the things we try to control are because they are unknown or because we are afraid to: let go, lose control or fail.
One thing I learned in my life coaching class was "Awareness + Choice = New Behavior"
I believe that being aware you are afraid or have control issues helps you make a choice toward letting go or trusting.
So all that to say, I grew a lot in 2017 but I also have fears about the things I am growing in. The fear that wells up inside of me is something that I want to work through. So my word for the year is Brave.
There has actually been a lot of talk lately about bravery. Below are some authors I have been/am wanting to listen to audio books on:
Jennifer Hatmaker :: Of Mess & Moxie (Wrangling Delight out of this Wild and Glorious Life)
Nicole Unice::: Brave Enough
One tale of Bravery is this girl Yeonmi Park who escaped persecution in North Korea. To have escaped, survived and live to tell her story is amazing and so brave. She also has a book out called "In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom" so that's on my list to read/listen to as well.
Overall, I want to look back at the end of the year and see how I grew from living and making decisions out of fear and living in confidence, vulnerability and bravery. Thanks for letting me share with you!
